Tradition and culture combine for Easter in Sitges

This Sunday gets the Easter calendar of activities under way, culminating on Friday, 18 April, with the singing of traditional songs known as Caramelles.

Sitges offers an extensive Easter programme. One of the most traditional events is the singing of Caramelles, again providing the annual soundtrack for this festivity. Over 150 singers and musicians will be taking to the streets to perform these classic compositions and others created more recently. During the evening of 19 April, from roughly 10 pm to 11 pm, the three local groups (El Retiro, Prado and Caramelles Sitgetanes) will be offering the first joint performance in Plaça de l'Ajuntament.  Following the performance, Sitges Town Council will be offering a tasting of typical Monfló de Pascua cakes accompanied by Malvasia de Sitges wine, courtesy of the Hospital Sant Joan Baptista de Sitges. The three groups will then be performing again at the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, once the Easter Vigil celebration ends around 11.30 pm. The three groups will coincide again at the Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista on Monday, 21 April. On the same day, the three groups will be performing individually around the streets of Sitges, at houses, shops and hospitality establishments. In parallel, and also in keeping with tradition, that same Monday will see Caramelles sung at the Santuari del Vinyet after the mass that starts at 11 am.

The programme for Easter kicks off in Plaça de l'Ajuntament on Sunday, 13 April, with the blessing of palm leaves and olive branches at 12.30 pm. Before that, there will be blessings in the square by the church of Sant Joan Baptista in the neighbourhood of Poble Sec (11 am), and at the Escola Pia (11.30 am).

During Easter, and through until Easter Monday, tradition and popular culture will be present in Sitges through other activities such as the Easter Procession. The Paso (procession representing an episode of the Passion) sets off on Friday, 18 April, with the following route:  Baluard, Mirador Miquel Utrillo, Fonollar, Baluard Vidal i Quadras, Port de n’Alegre, Rafael Llopart, Sant Damià, Sant Sebastià, Jesús, Sant Bartomeu, Sant Gaudenci, Sant Francesc, Cap de la Vila, Major, Pl. Ajuntament and Pl. Baluard.
