Sitges International Patchwork Festival marks its 20th anniversary aiming to boost its global audience
The Sitges International Patchwork Festival is marking its 20th anniversary from 20 to 23 March with the goal of reaching a broader audience. Organised by the Spanish Patchwork Association in collaboration with Sitges Town Council, this leading event in the textile sector will have more than 100 exhibitors in the trade fair to be set up in Passeig de la Ribera. This will be the epicentre of the event with a total of three marquees and an overall surface area of more than 2,000 m². However, it will also be possible to visit the event at six other exhibition spaces in the town with artistic creations on display.
This year's programme will be complemented with the professional fair at the Hotel Calípolis, the Young Talents competition and the training area, which includes monographic courses by international professionals and workshops.
The Councillor for Tourism, Xavi Ripoll, stressed that “the International Patchwork Festival is a key event for Sitges as it contributes decisively to the decentralisation of tourism and the diversification of our range of cultural options. It also has an increasingly international visitor profile. We are proud to be holding the twentieth edition and to reaffirm our commitment to continue holding the festival in our town for many years to come”.
The organiser of the International Patchwork Festival, Imma Farreró Escolà, offered a very positive evaluation of the first twenty years of an event that “started out as something small and modest, and has become one of the most important events in Europe, if not the most important. The Sitges Patchwork festival was first held in 2005, with 16 exhibitors and 2,000 visitors, and now, in 2025, the event reaches its twentieth edition with 115 exhibitors and some 50,000 visitors”. Imma Farreró Escolà emphasised how important it is that “95% of the companies at the trade fair are directed by women, giving the festival added value”.
8 international exhibitors
The universe of textile art can be found in six exhibition spaces in the town: the Miramar-Centro Cultural, the Mercat Vell, the Escorxador, the Estudi Vidal, the Espai Cultural Pere Stämpfli (home of the Grup d’Estudis Sitgetans) and the chapel of the Fundación Ave María. The work of recognised artists in this sector, mostly international, will be displayed in these exhibition spaces.
Highlights among this year’s exhibitions include three Japanese displays: ‘Boros’ by the collector Kiyoshi Tatsumi, which was exhibited in the former Museo Amuse; the exhibition by the Japanese artist Taeko Murakami, who presents traditional embroidery by Kogin & Hishizashi, and the exhibition with creations by the renowned Japanese patchwork artist and teacher, Yoko Okamoto, along with some pieces by her students.
There’s also a chance to visit ‘Quilts en rêve’, by the French collector Dominique Husson, and exhibitions with artistic creations by Lee Jongkyeong (South Korea), by the Korea Contemporary Group and others.
