Synopsis
The world of the court, the workers, and the fairies collide to hilarious and occasionally terrifying effect in one of Shakespeare's most poetic and beloved plays.
Great celebrations are to be planned for the wedding of Theseus, Duke of Athens and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, but their joy is interrupted by Egeus, a father with a grievance, insisting that his daughter, Hermia, marries the man of his choice. She is in love elsewhere and defies her father, with the result that she and her lover, Lysander, flee to the forest outside Athens, and are pursued by Demetrius, her father's choice, and her friend Helena, who is in love with Demetrius.
The forest, far from being a sanctuary, is a not altogether friendly place whether real world and that of the supernatural collide. In the forest Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the fairies have turned the world upside down as a result of a terrifying quarrel. Through the mischief of Oberon's servant Puck the lovers become entangled in Oberon’s revenge, and the resulting chaos tests their friendship almost beyond endurance. In addition, a group of workmen, amateur actors, meet in secret at midnight in the forest to rehearse a play, which they hope to perform at the Duke's wedding. It is too good an opportunity for Puck, and his delight in anarchy, to miss.
