Centro de Interpretación de la Malvasia de Sitges

The winery which has conserved the legacy

Malvasia wine in Sitges is synonymous with Hospital Sant Joan Baptista winery, key in the preservation of this unique product specific to the town. In fact, the phylloxera pest, along with the appearance of Champagne in the last quarter of the 19th century, marked the beginning of a downward spiral for the Malvasia variety.

Conscious that the Malvasia would end up disappearing completely, a short while before his death, the diplomat from Sitges, Manuel Llopis de Casades (1885-1935), wanted to avoid this and so left the Hospital de San Juan Bautista a vineyard located in Aiguadolç, as well as the family business, based on Malvasia production.
