Sitges renews its commitment as a sustainable destination

The transversal and joint work between the Tourism Department of the Sitges City Council and the private sector for tourism sustainability is recognized through the Biosphere Certificates and helps position the Sitges brand and improve the management of the territory

Sitges renews its commitment as a sustainable destination thanks to the fact that 35 companies, resources and tourist services in the territory, including beaches, accommodation, restaurants, golf, beach bars, ports and active tourism companies, maintain their adherence to the Biosphere certification.

 

Among the companies, services and tourist resources that become part of the project for the first time: La Caseta, Little Beach House and ME Sitges Terramar, while maintaining their commitment to sustainability; Agbar, Blau Sitges, Camping El Garrofer, Camping Sitges, Club de Golf Terramar, Cristina Milà, Gremi d'Hosteleria de Sitges, Guingueta Nomada Beach, Hotel Calipolis, Nootka Kayak & Sup, the two tourist offices of Sitges, 15 beaches ( Cala Ginesta, Cala Morisca, Aiguadolç, Garraf, Estanyol, La Barra, Bassa Rodona, La Fragata, La Ribera, Riera Xica, Les Anquines, Les Botigues, Sant Sebastià, Terramar and Balmins), the Port of Sitges- Aiguadolç, Sciències Can Girona, Sunway Playa Golf & Spa and Vivero Beach Club. Last week the Biosphere 2024 Certificates were awarded. These recognitions are within the “Commitment to the sustainability of Tourism Destination Barcelona Biosphere” program led by Node Garraf, the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce.

 

The fact of having so many tourist resources and services working with Biosphere has allowed Sitges to obtain a higher level of accreditation from 2022 and be distinguished with the Biosphere Gold certification, a recognition of transversal and joint work with the private sector regarding sustainability. , cultural, economic, environmental, social and good governance, which helps position the Sitges brand and improve the management of the territory. 

 

Sitges became the second destination in the Catalan territory to obtain Biosphere certification in 2016, after Barcelona. Since then, numerous companies and resources in the territory have adhered to the commitment until obtaining Biosphere Gold certification. Annually as a destination this involves working on a specific action plan towards sustainability and in coordination with other departments and local entities with the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations as a background framework and working to raise awareness among citizens, tourists and visitors. 

 

Biosphere is a voluntary and independent certification in sustainable tourism created by ITR, Institute of Responsible Tourism, internationally recognized and supported by UN Tourism and whose ultimate objective is the development of the tourism industry in a sustainable way, the promotion of social and cultural authenticity of each destination and community.
