Sitges Tourism

The third edition of the Vila del Llibre moves to the Mercat Vell

As part of this literary contest, twenty activities will be scheduled from November 3 to 5 at the Mercat Vell, the Palau del Rei Moro and the Pere Stämpfli Cultural Space (headquarters of the GES).

Sitges, Vila del Llibre has changed its model and after two years dedicated to the evolution of the town during the 20th century, this year begins a new cycle dedicated to the dialogue between Catalan culture and a foreign culture. This 2023 Portuguese culture inaugurates the series with tables dedicated to the great figures of its letters and to the relationship that Catalonia maintains with Portugal.

Sitges, Vila del Llibre is a literary event that is part of the Book Villages Network that promotes VilaDelLlibre.CAT and has the support of Sitges City Council.

Portuguese culture and Catalan culture

As a novelty, this year the contest will have an international aspect and will be dedicated to Portugal as a guest culture. This meeting between two literary powers of southern Europe will create a cultural bridge. To promote knowledge of Portuguese literature, the curator of the festival, Sebastià Bennasar, has organized a program full of debates and dialogues between the two cultures, with the presence of translators, teachers, authors and speakers who have acted as a bridge between one side and the other from the Iberian Peninsula.

Activities for all audiences

Despite the prominent presence of Portuguese culture, the Vila del Llibre will be, as always, a festival designed for all audiences. In this sense, in addition to the activities with a Portuguese accent, there will be children's and family events, with storytellers, musical activities and workshops that will take place in the Town Hall Square and at the Pere Stämpfli Cultural Center, headquarters of the GES .

Sitges, present and protagonist

Sitges, Vila del Llibre also has the collaboration of organizations and companies from Sitges, which collaborate with the festival, such as the Agrupació de Balls Populars de Sitges since the Palau del Rei Moro will be the stage for some of the activities of the festival; the Sitgetan Studies Group which will turn its headquarters, the Pere Stämpfli Cultural Space, into a headquarters for children's activities; the Centre d'Interpretació de la Malvasia (CIM); the Stämpfli Foundation, which will offer guided tours throughout the weekend, and the Hotel Estela, which will also show and contextualize its contemporary art collection with guided tours on Saturday and Sunday.

About the Book Village

The Xarxa de Villes del Llibre (www.viladelllibre.cat) is a cultural tourism movement whose aim is to spread culture through literature and book trades. Promoted by VilaDelLlibre.CAT, the Network was born to become a social and economic engine, and at the same time, generate a positive impact on the territory and in the lives of citizens. It is an initiative that has the book as its engine to transform and rediscover a territory, enriching its environment through a creative and quality cultural proposal. The Xarxa de Viles del Llibre de Catalunya wants to be a benchmark in a circular economy model that promotes sustainability and that promotes cultural accessibility beyond the big cities.
