Sitges renews again the Biosphere Gold certification

The internationally recognised certification is awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) which accredits sustainable, environmental, social, cultural and governance destinations.

Sitges has revalidated the Biosphere Gold certification awarded by the Institute for Responsible Tourism (ITR). This recognition distinguishes those destinations that accredit that they are working transversally and jointly with the private sector towards tourism sustainability.

The Biosphere Destination certification is an internationally recognised label, which recognises the work of the destinations for a sustainable development model from an economic, environmental, economic, social and territorial point of view and with a transversal and coordinated governance with the private sector. The certification is focused on advancing towards the fulfilment of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

The councillor for Tourism, Brandon Jones, highlighted "the importance of maintaining this prestigious and internationally recognised certification, which shows that Sitges has a solid project and a clear roadmap in terms of tourism management in the town". The councillor added that "the will is to continue working along these lines to overcome the challenges we still have on the table. Having the Biosphere certification accredits that in Sitges we are working to advance in the fulfilment of the 17 SDGs and in accordance with the international agendas".

In the last audit, opportunities for improvement were detected, such as the preparation of the proposal for a diagnosis of tourist accessibility in Sitges, the implementation of the project to create a system for the reuse of water from the Sitges - Sant Pere de Ribes wastewater treatment plant, and to increase actions for the dissemination and conservation of cultural heritage, among others. These actions will be incorporated into future action plans. The audit also identified several strong points, such as the project for the environmentalisation of the Can Milà area, Sitges' adhesion to the "Hospitality for the Climate" project, the actions carried out for the recovery of the Riera de Ribes and the start of work on the diagnosis of accessibility in the municipality.
