Guided tour of the route of the 'Americanos' houses
In Sitges, we refer to americanos as the indianos who left the town in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries to seek their fortune on the other side of the Atlantic, particularly in Cuba Many of those who were more fortunate and returned home built houses and mansions that helped to urbanise (as well as modernise) the small expansion of Sitges with buildings that still showcase their architectural and artistic beauty, as well as their heritage value.
This route takes you through streets such as Illa de Cuba, Francesc Gumà, Jesús, Sant Bartomeu, and Cap de la Vila, among others, to admire some of these eclectic, neoclassical, or modernist constructions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This event is part of the European Heritage Days programme, celebrated by more than a hundred municipalities in Catalonia, aimed at promoting and sharing the richness and diversity of cultural heritage. It is an initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, promoted in Catalonia by the Catalan Heritage Agency.
