Malvasia Week

October 29th to November 16th.

The Malvasia of Sitges Week  is an annual event dedicated to celebrating and promoting this emblematic wine of the region. During this week, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of activities, such as wine tastings, guided tours of vineyards and wineries, gastronomic pairings, and talks about the history and production process of Sitges' Malvasia. The initiative not only highlights the value of this sweet and native wine but also the cultural and wine-making heritage of the area, emphasizing the role it has played in the wine-making tradition of the Garraf region.

 Come check out a series of cultural and culinary events to celebrate Malvasia de Sitges, much more than a sweet wine.

 

WEDNESDAY 29 OCTOBER

7-9 p.m. OPENING OF THE 10th MALVASIA DE SITGES WEEK.

We’re kicking off the 10th Malvasia de Sitges Week in the birthplace of the variety, at the Malvasia de Sitges Interpretation Centre, where we’ll present the activities, projects and goals behind this edition taking place from 29 October to 16 November: promoting, celebrating and sharing Malvasia from several angles.

 

FRIDAY 1 NOVEMBER

6-8 p.m.  BACK TO THE BASICS: MALVASIA FOR ALL SAINTS’ DAY. A cultural pairing of 5 Malvasia wines.

Sweet Malvasia as a heritage element for All Saints’ Day, celebrated beyond Catalonia.

We’ll be tasting:

  • PRS Malvasia 2020 – Pietro Beconcini (Tuscany, Italy) – Malvasia Lunga aged in cement eggs
  • Vinsanto – Fattorie Melini (Tuscany, Italy) – Naturally sweet wine aged in wood
  • Vintage Malvasia - Barbeito Winery (Madeira, Portugal) – Fortified Madeira Malvasia, aged in French oak for 5 years
  • Semi-sweet 2022 Malvasia - El Grifo (Lanzarote, Canary Islands) – Naturally sweet volcanic Malvasia
  • La centenària 2002 - Celler de l’Hospital (Sitges) – Malvasia de Sitges mistelle, oxidative ageing in chestnut wood.

Paired with panellets (a traditional Catalan All Saints’ Day pastry) prepared and selected by students from IES Joan Ramon Benaprés, a secondary school specialising in the hospitality industry.

 

SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  MALVASIA AT THE MARKET! Sales and tastings

If you’ve never tasted our Malvasia de Sitges wines, now’s your chance. Drop by the Saturday market, 10 minutes from the Sitges train station, to discover our variety firsthand and find the perfect wine for you! See you there!

 

SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER

6-8 p.m. MALVASIA AND AENEAS: a journey around the Mediterranean. A cultural pairing of 3 Malvasia wines

With Esteve Nabona leading the pairing, we’ll enjoy a showing of Baroque opera Dido & Aeneas, by English composer Henry Purcell, in a one-of-a-kind setting.

We’ll be tasting:

  • Most Malvasia de Sitges – Celler Suriol (Vilobí) – grape juice // Prologue
  • Malvasia de Mar 2021 – Celler de l’Hospital (Sitges) – young wine aged underwater // Act 1
  • Monembasia 2021 – Celler de l’Hospital (Sitges) – sparkling wine using the traditional method // Act 2
  • Malvasia dolça 2013 - Celler de l’Hospital (Sitges) – Malvasia de Sitges mistelle, oxidative ageing in chestnut wood //Act 3

 

SUNDAY 3 NOVEMBER

TASTE OF GRAPES. Tour through the streets of Sitges

Guided tour through the streets of Sitges, with a focus on Malvasia de Sitges and the history of vineyards and wine in this seaside town.

We’ll end up at the Corral de la Vila, which houses the CIM, where we’ll conclude the experience with a tasting of the Celler de l’Hospital’s Malvasia wine.

MONDAY 4 NOVEMBER

12-2 p.m. MALVASIA, THE MYTH. Educational session for specialists

Led by Enric Bartra, researcher at the Catalan Institute of Vineyards and Wine (INCAVI) and CIM director and historian Alba Gràcia.

 

4-8 p.m. 4th PROFESSIONAL MALVASIA DE SITGES WINE FAIR. Trade fair for specialists

The fourth edition of this event for professionals is the perfect opportunity to taste different kinds of Malvasia wines, learn about new trends in the sector, network with others in the field and most importantly, enjoy this grape variety.

In this activity led by sommelier Ramon Antich, we’ll taste four DO Penedès Malvasia wines.

 

FRIDAY 8 NOVEMBER

5:30-8 p.m. THE NAMES OF MALVASIA WINES: THE GREAT DILEMMA. Round-table discussion and wine tasting.

Organised in collaboration with Sitges Libraries.

An opportunity to reflect on and learn about what makes a variety part of the Aromatic Malvasia family, which terms are synonymous, and which grape varieties are Malvasia in name only. Moderated by CIM director Alba Gràcia.  We’ll taste 6 different Malvasia varieties that can be found in Catalonia and Spain. 

 

SATURDAY 9 AND SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER

Saturday 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Sunday 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. THE GREAT WINE TASTING EXPERIENCE AT LA MALVASERIA. Malvasia de Sitges wine fair for the public.

For the third year in a row, La Malvaseria, the CIM’s wine bar specialising in Malvasia, will be overflowing with Mavasia wines from all over Catalonia and the world.

Over fifty single-variety Malvasia wines will fill our glasses as we take in the unique setting of the Malvasia Interpretation Centre, a true cradle of culture.

 

SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER

First session 5 p.m. // Second session 8 p.m. LA MALVASIA DE SITGES, a comedy in verse. Theatrical reading.

This year’s closing event will take the form of a play: specifically, La Malvasia de Sitges, a sainete, or one-act comedy written by Francesc de Sales Vidal i Torrents in 1899, adapted for a theatrical reading by Ignasi d’Artés i Magrinyà, and now chosen by the Gent de Teatre de Sitges theatre group to close out this year’s edition.

 

SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER

9 p.m. DO PENEDÈS IN SITGES. Tasting menu with Malvasia de Sitges.

Event organised by DO Penedès.  

Come along on a journey in which DO Penedès wines will land in Sitges for a pairing with our local cuisine. Malvasia and seafood cuisine will show that the earth/sea tandem is a feast for the senses.
